Memories of Mom

Inspiration for this canvas piece came from the Spring Farmhouse-Simple Things Scrapbook Paper. It immediately reminded me of my mom- the warm, simple upbringing we had as a family. Basic needs met, not a lot of money-but a great deal of love.

Prep canvas surface with gesso- this medium creates a "toothy", stiff  textured surface. It primes the surface or substrate (ie.canvas, wood, or cardboard)  for painting. Without gesso, the paint would soak into the weave of the canvas.I sometimes use a mix of a  lesser pirce brand gesso and a higher price brand to create a creamy, smooth  texture medium.

Next, used the following acrylic paints mixed with matte medium and a bit of titanium to create an even balance of color as background.

I wanted to add a bit of visual texture - so I used a (single layer)  black and white floral pattern napkin. To easily separate the layers (usually 3) of a napkin, I use a scotch taped "finger".

I found (one of my all time favorite mediums) Dina Wakley's soft gel matte medium so easy to use as an adhesive for tissue/napkin paper onto canvas or any other type of substrate surface. This gel medium is so gentle to use- brush it onto substrate surface and then onto tissue paper-never tears- just blends seamlessly right onto canvas.

As a center focal point- I made an inkjet photo copy of my "younger" mom peeking through a window frame- one of the images found on the Spring Farmhouse- simple things - cardstock paper which I cut out and collaged.

Finished off canvas by collaging various found objects, charms, chipboard, rubberstamping, and more napkin images.
